The best thing about this recipe is the simple ingredients. Cocoa powder, butter, eggs, sugar, and Marie biscuits; that’s it and there’s no need for condensed milk or baking. This is a simple cold cake.

Cocoa powder: For best results, use a good quality cocoa powder like Dutch Process Dark Cocoa Powder.

Butter: I used lightly salted butter, if using unsalted butter add a pinch of salt.

Chocolate: Use your favorite chocolate, I used milk chocolate, dark chocolate would be the best choice.

Nuts: I find peanuts to be a great addition that adds flavor to the snacks. But any roasted and lightly salted nuts like pecans, pistachios, almonds, or hazelnuts would make a great topping.

Biscuits: For best results, use any teatime biscuit like Marie. If not available, try using Golden Oreos.

Measure the ingredients and grease a round baking pan with a removable base.

Step 1

In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until combined. The sugar will still be grainy but will melt when warmed.

Step 2

Add two eggs and beat again.

Step 3

Add the cocoa powder and mix evenly.

Step 4

Cook the chocolate sauce over medium heat, stirring constantly. First the sugar will dissolve, then the eggs will cook so that the sauce thickens further. When the sauce thickens, remove it from the heat. The video is helpful here.

Step 5

Break my biscuits into pieces and mix into the chocolate sauce until well combined.

Step 6

Transfer the cake mixture to the greased pan. Cover with cling wrap and chill in the freezer for 15 minutes.

Step 7

Heat the cream in a pan and add the chocolate, remove the pan from the heat and continue stirring until the chocolate has melted. Your chocolate ganache is ready. Let the ganache cool for 5-10 minutes so that it thickens but is still warm and drinkable. (A very thin hot ganache may run out of the bottom of the pan.)

Step 8

Pour the hot chocolate ganache over the cake and spread evenly. Finish with roasted peanuts or nuts of your choice. Cool the cake before slicing. Refrigerate the cooled cake.

Step 9

Cut the cake with a sharp knife and serve as desired.

Variations

Add your favorite chocolate (I tried Kit Kat, Hershey’s, and Galaxy) or nuts when making the How TO Make Chocolate Cold Cake Recipe sauce. So get creative and experiment with cold cakes. Kids love it like crazy.

You can also serve it with a scoop of vanilla or chocolate ice cream. In the picture below, I left out the chocolate ganache layer and served it with ice cream. It still tastes delicious.

And yes! The sauce is very chocolatey. Sometimes, I make this sauce alone and use it to pour over other desserts. You need to store the sauce in the refrigerator and warm it up before pouring it.
